Hero tackling loneliness

The council recognises loneliness and social isolation are serious problems in the borough for people of all ages.

What's the problem?

The council recognises loneliness and social isolation are serious problems in the borough for people of all ages. Loneliness and social isolation are harmful to health. They can lead to poorer physical and mental health and they increase chances of developing dementia, depression and early death.

What are we doing about it?

Many services in the borough help to tackle loneliness and social isolation. Older people are at a high risk of feeling lonely and isolated often because of reduced mobility, bereavement or not having family close by.

LinkAge Plus is a network of community groups which offer outreach and activities for people over 50.Social prescribers located in GP practices offer one-to-one appointments where people can talk about their concerns with a specialist who will identify the best assistance, often through local voluntary services. In November 2017, the Council brought together stakeholders from the community to feedback on 2 projects commissioned to understand and tackle loneliness. It was also an opportunity to discuss the next steps. More information on the projects can be found in the reports linked below including a locally produced video on loneliness.
